SUMMARY:Side Event at PRI in Person 2025 - Labour Rights Investor Network (LRIN): Understanding and Acting on Labour Rights Risks in the Platform Economy at a Moment of Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Global Unions’ Committee on Workers’ Capital (CWC) \nDate: Thursday\, November 6\, 2025 \nTime: 8:00 – 9:30 am \nLocation: Anhembi Convention Centre\, Room 103\, Av. São Paulo\, Brazil \nEnglish/Spanish/Portuguese translation will be provided \nReserve your place \nThe Global Unions’ Committee on Workers’ Capital (CWC) invites PRI in Person participants to a breakfast session on the Labour Rights Investor Network (LRIN). \nFreedom of association and collective bargaining are universal labour rights. Yet the majority of the 150 million people working via online platforms are treated as self-employed or classified as independent contractors\, which restricts their ability to join a union and excludes them from minimum-wage guarantees\, paid leave and other social protections in many jurisdictions. \nWhen platform business models are misaligned with international labour standards\, investors may face material operational\, legal\, regulatory and reputational risks that pose distinct stewardship challenges. \nThis session will explain why labour rights in the platform economy matter for PRI signatories and how they may approach stewardship. Investors will hear directly from workers\, unions and peers\, and explore engagement strategies to mitigate risk. \nSPEAKERS \nWelcome: \n\nDavid Atkin\, CEO of the PRI\nChristoffer Jonsson\, CWC Chair and CEO of Folksam LO Tjänstepension\, Sweden\n\nModerators: \n\nZaee Deshpande\, Manager\, Global Unions’ Committee on Workers’ Capital (CWC)/SHARE\nTamara Herman\, Associate Director\, Global Unions’ Committee on Workers’ Capital (CWC)/SHARE\n\nPanelists: \n\nKiran Aziz\, Head of Responsible Investments at KLP\, Norway\nMarcelo Pariente\, General Secretary of ASIMM – Asociación Sindical de Motociclistas\, Mensajeros y Servicios\, Argentina\nNicolas Souza Santos\, iFood Delivery Rider; Secretary of the Association of Motoboys\, Motogirls\, and Couriers of Juiz de Fora (AMMEJUF); and member of the National Alliance of App-Based Couriers (ANEA)\, Brazil\n\nClosing: \n\nPaddy Crumlin\, CWC Vice-Chair\, President of the International Transport Workers Federation and National Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA)\, Australia\n\nYou’ll leave with: \n\nGuidance on mitigating material risk by strengthening labour-rights stewardship with a focus on Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining\nReal-world examples of labour-rights risks and engagement opportunities\nConcrete stewardship tools and investor asks for platform companies\n\nHosted by the Labour Rights Investor Network (LRIN)\, this session will show how joining our network can strengthen PRI signatories’ stewardship. \nAbout the LRIN: Since its launch in 2023\, the LRIN has grown into a global network of over 52 investors from Canada\, the United States\, Europe\, and Australia\, representing USD $3.9 trillion in assets under management. The network provides a platform for investors to better understand challenges and seize opportunities related to stewardship on labour rights\, with a particular focus on freedom of association and collective bargaining. \nSeating for this event is limited. SUMMARY:Where the Rubber Meets the Road: Upholding Labour Rights Risks at Bridgestone Firestone Liberia
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \nDate: December 11\, 2024\nTime: 6 am PST | 9 am EST | 2 pm GMT | 3 pm CET \nSpeakers include: \n\nContracted worker\, Liberia\nRepresentative of Firestone Agricultural Workers Union of Liberia (FAWUL)\, Liberia\nDeborah Greenfield\, Former Deputy Director-General for Policy\, International Labour Organization (ILO)\, US\nMartin Buttle\, Better Work Lead\, CCLA Investment Management Limited\, UK\n\nBridgestone Corporation (TSE: 5108) is a Japanese multinational company and the world’s largest tire and rubber manufacturer. Through its Firestone Liberia Inc. subsidiary\, Bridgestone operates the world’s largest rubber plantation in Liberia\, where it is the country’s biggest private employer. \nThe Firestone Agricultural Workers Union of Liberia (FAWUL) is seeking to improve the working conditions and protect the rights of thousands of contract workers at the plantation. This webinar will provide investors with first-hand information on working conditions and labour rights risks at the Firestone Liberia Inc. rubber plantation in Liberia. \nBackground \nIn 2007\, workers at the Firestone Liberia plantation successfully formed a trade union\, the Firestone Agricultural Workers Union of Liberia (FAWUL). The union achieved a first collective bargaining agreement in 2008\,[1] and has re-negotiated successive collective bargaining agreements since then\, gradually improving wages\, working conditions and living conditions for plantation workers and their families. However\, in 2019\, Firestone management took the dramatic step of terminating the employment of more than 2\,000 FAWUL-represented employees and required them to sign employment contracts with one of twelve authorized third-party labour contracting agencies in order to keep working.[2] \nContract workers on the Firestone Liberia’s plantation voted to form a union on August 31\, 2024\, hoping to become Firestone employees represented by FAWUL and address concerns regarding their working conditions. Bridgestone has refused to recognize contract workers as employees of Firestone Liberia and has said that contract workers may not join FAWUL.[3] \nThis webinar will allow investors to hear from academic experts\, legal experts\, trade unions and workers about potential financial and reputational risks to Bridgestone and its customers stemming from alleged violations of workers’ rights at the Firestone Liberia plantation. \nThis webinar is co-hosted by the Global Unions’ Committee on Workers’ Capital (CWC) and the United Steelworkers (USW). \n \n[1] Global Labor Justice\, “Firestone Plantation Workers in Liberia Reach Historic First Collective Agreement\,” July 8\, 2008\, at https://laborrights.org/releases/firestone-plantation-workers-liberia-reach-historic-first-collective-agreement \n[2] Solidarity Center\, “Liberia: Firestone Contract Workers Win Union\, Equity\,” September 4\, 2024. https://www.solidaritycenter.org/liberia-firestone-contract-workers-win-union-equity/. \n[3] Rubber and Plastics News\, “Firestone Liberia contractors vote to unionize with FAWUL\,” September 30\, 2024. https://www.solidaritycenter.org/liberia-firestone-contract-workers-win-union-equity/

SUMMARY:Closing the Gap: Building Union-Investor Dialogue to Inform Labour Rights Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \nThe growth of the ESG industry has generated an ecosystem of disclosure frameworks and a plethora of products that consolidate and disseminate ESG data. There are questions regarding the extent to which the proliferation of ESG data has equipped investors to identify and mitigate labour rights risks effectively. \nThis session will explore the potential and limits of ESG data on workforce issues\, drawing on trade union and investor perspectives. It will discuss how dialogue with trade unions supplements conventional data sources and assists investor stewardship practices. It will touch on research products that unions provide to investors. Finally\, it will explain how the Labour Rights Investor Network (LRIN)\, an investor network hosted by the CWC\, is facilitating information flow on labour risks in sectors and countries where visibility to investors may be limited. \nSpeakers: \n\nJohn Adler\, Chief ESG Officer\, Office of the New York City Comptroller\, USA\nRachel Hargreaves\, Investor Engagement Advisor\, UNI Global Union\, Switzerland\nCasey Thompson\, Worker’s Capital Manager\, Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU)\, Australia\n\nModerator: \n\nAaron Brenner\, Senior Capital Markets Analyst\, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW)

SUMMARY:Driven to the Edge: An investor briefing on freedom of association and collective bargaining at Tesla
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \n \n \n \n\n\nTesla’s (TSLA) Annual General Meeting will take place on June 13th and investors are raising critical questions about the company’s track record of meeting internationally recognized labour rights standards. The company has been repeatedly accused of interfering with workers’ rights across its global operations which have exposed its shareholders to operational\, legal\, and reputational risks jeopardizing Tesla’s long-term value. Join us on June 4th for a webinar discussion where investors will hear directly from a Tesla worker\, a representative from the Swedish trade union (IF Metall)\, and concerned Tesla shareholders. The panel will discuss the associated risks of the automaker’s anti-union practices and a shareholder resolution calling for a Non-interference and Collective Bargaining Policy at Tesla. \nWhile Tesla has recently modified its Global Human Rights Policy\, the company continues to be entangled with credible allegations of violating its workers’ rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining. In Sweden\, Tesla is facing a prolonged strike and solidarity actions across northern Europe stemming from the company’s refusal to negotiate a collective agreement. Meanwhile in Germany – the location of its first European Gigafactory employing more than 11\,000 workers – the company faces allegations that it is refusing to bargain with a union. In the United States\, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has issued complaints against Tesla citing violations of its workers’ labour rights. In response to these troubling indicators\, a coalition of investors filed a shareholder resolution requesting the Tesla Board of Directors to adopt a comprehensive labour rights policy that explicitly commits the company to non-interference in worker organizing\, good faith and timely bargaining\, compliance with the highest labour standards\, and a processes to identify\, protect\, and remedy any labour rights violations. \nThis event\, co-hosted by SOC Investment Group and the Global Union’s Committee for Workers’ Capital (CWC)\, will bring together diverse voices from around the world to explore how Tesla can strengthen its policies and practices in line with investor expectations to better mitigate workforce-related risks. \n*Please note that unfortunately\, this event is not open to the press. \n\n \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:Below the surface: Governance risks and ESG issues at Glencore
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \n \n \n \n\n\nGlencore’s (LSE:GLEN) Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on May 29th and investors are raising critical questions regarding the board’s corporate governance track record\, including its oversight of environmental\, social and governance (ESG)-related risks. \nAfter a turbulent year that included lawsuits filed by 197 investors due to alleged losses to shareholders following a conviction for bribery\, Glencore is facing human rights and environmental controversies in several jurisdictions. With the company poised to take over Teck Resources’ coal business\, Glencore faces new environmental and social controversies related to pollution on indigenous lands and climate risk. The issues raised by workers\, community organizations and climate advocates around the world require rigorous oversight\, heightened transparency and skilled governance. As the company’s 2024 AGM approaches\, investors have an opportunity to assess whether the company is responding appropriately to these challenges. \nThis pre-AGM webinar will allow investors to hear directly from climate analysts\, trade unions\, civil society representatives and investors who will provide direct insight into Glencore’s oversight of the ESG risks associated with its business model. Participating investors will gain visibility into issues that are not disclosed in the company’s reporting but which may present financial\, reputational\, legal and other risks to Glencore\, with implications for investor due diligence.  \nThis webinar is hosted by Fair Finance International\, the Global Unions’ Committee on Workers’ Capital (CWC)\, IndustriALL Global Union and Oxfam. \nModerator: \n\n\nTom Powdrill\, Director\, Social Governance \n\n\nSpeakers: \n\nClaudia Blanco\, union leader at Sintracarbón Colombia\nPaul Maquet\, CooperAccion (Peru)\nPhestus Motshabi\, Glencore National Council Secretary\, National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA)\nSarah Brewin\, Company Strategist\, Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility (ACCR)\nClaire Gavini\, Senior ESG Engagement Specialist\, Ethos Foundation\nFrank Wagemans\, Senior Engagement Specialist\, Achmea Investment Management\n\n  \nThis webinar will be held under the Chatham House Rule.

SUMMARY:Introducing the Labor Rights Investor Network: A Forum for Investor Education and Exchange on Workplace Rights
DESCRIPTION:Investors have three reasons to advance their stewardship of labour rights. First\, labour rights are human rights and investors have responsibilities to respect these rights in their investment and stewardship decisions. Second\, respect for labour rights enables investors to mitigate systemic and company-specific risks. And third\, freedom of association and collective bargaining\, along with other worker rights such as the right to a safe and healthy workplace\, can improve corporate performance. \nThe Labour Rights Investors Network will provide investors with the actionable information they need to engage on labour issues\, uphold their responsibilities to respect human rights\, mitigate workplace risks\, and drive stronger returns. An initiative of the Global Unions’ Committee on Workers’ Capital (CWC)\, the Network will offer events and resources\, including regular opportunities for education and exchange on issues such as identifying labour risks\, the impact of different legal contexts\, and how stewardship can improve transparency and performance on freedom of association and collective bargaining. The Network will provide written resources\, bring workers to share their experiences\, and connect investors to experts in such areas as international labour standards\, country-specific labour laws\, and workplace health and safety. \nOur first webinar will provide a selection of the types of content the Network will offer. You will hear from workers who have experienced labour risks firsthand\, learn about one company’s approach to mitigating that risk and hear from investors on why freedom of association is an important topic for stewardship. We will present an overview of the network and what you can expect from joining. \nWe are hosting two sessions of this webinar and invite you to register for the session that best fits your time zone and schedule as both events will follow the same agenda.
