SUMMARY:Closing the Gap: Building Union-Investor Dialogue to Inform Labour Rights Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \nThe growth of the ESG industry has generated an ecosystem of disclosure frameworks and a plethora of products that consolidate and disseminate ESG data. There are questions regarding the extent to which the proliferation of ESG data has equipped investors to identify and mitigate labour rights risks effectively. \nThis session will explore the potential and limits of ESG data on workforce issues\, drawing on trade union and investor perspectives. It will discuss how dialogue with trade unions supplements conventional data sources and assists investor stewardship practices. It will touch on research products that unions provide to investors. Finally\, it will explain how the Labour Rights Investor Network (LRIN)\, an investor network hosted by the CWC\, is facilitating information flow on labour risks in sectors and countries where visibility to investors may be limited. \nSpeakers: \n\nJohn Adler\, Chief ESG Officer\, Office of the New York City Comptroller\, USA\nRachel Hargreaves\, Investor Engagement Advisor\, UNI Global Union\, Switzerland\nCasey Thompson\, Worker’s Capital Manager\, Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU)\, Australia\n\nModerator: \n\nAaron Brenner\, Senior Capital Markets Analyst\, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW)

SUMMARY:Driven to the Edge: An investor briefing on freedom of association and collective bargaining at Tesla
DESCRIPTION:Register Now \n \n \n \n\n\nTesla’s (TSLA) Annual General Meeting will take place on June 13th and investors are raising critical questions about the company’s track record of meeting internationally recognized labour rights standards. The company has been repeatedly accused of interfering with workers’ rights across its global operations which have exposed its shareholders to operational\, legal\, and reputational risks jeopardizing Tesla’s long-term value. Join us on June 4th for a webinar discussion where investors will hear directly from a Tesla worker\, a representative from the Swedish trade union (IF Metall)\, and concerned Tesla shareholders. The panel will discuss the associated risks of the automaker’s anti-union practices and a shareholder resolution calling for a Non-interference and Collective Bargaining Policy at Tesla. \nWhile Tesla has recently modified its Global Human Rights Policy\, the company continues to be entangled with credible allegations of violating its workers’ rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining. In Sweden\, Tesla is facing a prolonged strike and solidarity actions across northern Europe stemming from the company’s refusal to negotiate a collective agreement. Meanwhile in Germany – the location of its first European Gigafactory employing more than 11\,000 workers – the company faces allegations that it is refusing to bargain with a union. In the United States\, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has issued complaints against Tesla citing violations of its workers’ labour rights. In response to these troubling indicators\, a coalition of investors filed a shareholder resolution requesting the Tesla Board of Directors to adopt a comprehensive labour rights policy that explicitly commits the company to non-interference in worker organizing\, good faith and timely bargaining\, compliance with the highest labour standards\, and a processes to identify\, protect\, and remedy any labour rights violations. \nThis event\, co-hosted by SOC Investment Group and the Global Union’s Committee for Workers’ Capital (CWC)\, will bring together diverse voices from around the world to explore how Tesla can strengthen its policies and practices in line with investor expectations to better mitigate workforce-related risks. \n*Please note that unfortunately\, this event is not open to the press. \n\n \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:Social Protection for Garment Workers - Employment Injury Scheme
DESCRIPTION:Register Here \n \n \n \n\n\nPlease join the Local Authority Pension Fund Forum (LAPFF) and IndustriALL Global Union for a one-hour investor webinar on 21 May at 3pm UK/4pm CET\, when we will explore the Employment Injury Scheme (EIS) for ready-made garment workers in Bangladesh. Speakers will include trade union representatives\, GIZ and signatory brands\, who will speak about the EIS and the impact it is already having.  \nThe EIS pilot was created to bring Bangladesh\, the world’s second largest exporter of garments\, closer to comprehensive employment injury insurance. Such insurance is one of the most fundamental forms of social protection\, an internationally recognized labour right central to building social resilience in the face of crises. The pilot is a concrete example of a social protection programme that is up and running: several dozen well-known brands and retailers are participating\, and payouts from the pilot’s fund to affected workers are underway. \nIn the webinar you will learn more about this innovative programme\, which brings together companies\, trade unions\, the government\, supplier factories and the ILO to solve a sector-wide challenge. We will also discuss why the EIS is relevant to investors\, and what they can do to support it.  \nThe webinar will be moderated by John Gray\, Vice Chair\, LAPFF. \nYou can register here: \n\n \n \n \n Register Here

DESCRIPTION:Register Now \n \n \n \n\n\nGlencore’s (LSE:GLEN) Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on May 29th and investors are raising critical questions regarding the board’s corporate governance track record\, including its oversight of environmental\, social and governance (ESG)-related risks. \nAfter a turbulent year that included lawsuits filed by 197 investors due to alleged losses to shareholders following a conviction for bribery\, Glencore is facing human rights and environmental controversies in several jurisdictions. With the company poised to take over Teck Resources’ coal business\, Glencore faces new environmental and social controversies related to pollution on indigenous lands and climate risk. The issues raised by workers\, community organizations and climate advocates around the world require rigorous oversight\, heightened transparency and skilled governance. As the company’s 2024 AGM approaches\, investors have an opportunity to assess whether the company is responding appropriately to these challenges. \nThis pre-AGM webinar will allow investors to hear directly from climate analysts\, trade unions\, civil society representatives and investors who will provide direct insight into Glencore’s oversight of the ESG risks associated with its business model. Participating investors will gain visibility into issues that are not disclosed in the company’s reporting but which may present financial\, reputational\, legal and other risks to Glencore\, with implications for investor due diligence.  \nThis webinar is hosted by Fair Finance International\, the Global Unions’ Committee on Workers’ Capital (CWC)\, IndustriALL Global Union and Oxfam. \nModerator: \n\n\nTom Powdrill\, Director\, Social Governance \n\n\nSpeakers: \n\nClaudia Blanco\, union leader at Sintracarbón Colombia\nPaul Maquet\, CooperAccion (Peru)\nPhestus Motshabi\, Glencore National Council Secretary\, National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA)\nSarah Brewin\, Company Strategist\, Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility (ACCR)\nClaire Gavini\, Senior ESG Engagement Specialist\, Ethos Foundation\nFrank Wagemans\, Senior Engagement Specialist\, Achmea Investment Management\n\n  \nThis webinar will be held under the Chatham House Rule.

SUMMARY:Labour at the Table at Amazon: 2024 Proxy Walk-through
DESCRIPTION:Key labour rights issues at Amazon will be discussed during this webinar hosted by SHARE and UNI Global Union. A panel featuring investors\, a labour rights expert and a worker will delve into the workforce-related risks that Amazon and its workers face and offer practical insights on how investors can address them during this proxy season and beyond.\n\nAt Amazon’s upcoming annual general meeting\, shareholders will have the opportunity to vote on two proposals addressing high stakes\, material labour rights risks at the Company:\n\n\nProposal on Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining: Filed by SHARE on behalf of the Catherine Donnelly Foundation and supported by a coalition of more than 20 investors\, this proposal urges the Board of Directors to commission an independent\, third-party assessment of Amazon’s adherence to its stated commitment to workers’ freedom of association and collective bargaining rights\, as outlined in the company’s Global Human Rights Principles.\nProposal on Health and Safety in Warehouses: Filed by Tulipshare\, this proposal asks the Board to commission an independent audit and report of the working conditions and treatment that Amazon warehouse workers face\, including the impact of its policies\, management\, performance metrics\, and targets.\nAlthough not new to the ballot\, these proposals are both addressing highly topical issues and risks that demand investors’ attention and action. This webinar brings together diverse voices from around the investor table including investors\, labour rights experts and current Amazon workers at the forefront of change and advocacy. With a wide range of perspectives\, this informative discussion will answer your most pressing questions about why these votes matter\, and how your voting decisions can contribute to better risk mitigation at Amazon and across your investment portfolio.\n\nThis webinar is presented with support from Tulipshare and Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR).

SUMMARY:Freedom of Association at SkyWest
DESCRIPTION:With unionization efforts at US companies continuing into 2024\, workplace rights have become an increasingly important topic of investor engagement across industries.\n\nInvestors expect portfolio companies to establish and disclose effective policies to respect fundamental labour rights. Recently\, airline industry leaders\, including Southwest Airlines\, United Airlines\, American Airlines and JetBlue\, have taken steps to strengthen their policies and practices in this regard. In contrast to its peers’ proactive approach to labor rights\, SkyWest Inc. is alleged to have retaliated against employees seeking union representation\, and to have formed an illegal company union. Amalgamated Bank has responded by filing a shareholder resolution that calls on the company to adopt a non-interference policy upholding its employees’ rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining.\n\nThis event\, hosted by SOC Investment Group\, will focus on SkyWest Inc.’s anti-union practices and the investor risk that results from a lack of clear labour rights policies. Panelists will explore the importance of non-interference by employers when employees are considering representation by a union and the specific legal and policy issues that are at play in SkyWest Inc.’s alleged company union. Participants will also hear from investors about their expectations of SkyWest Inc.\n\nSpeakers will include:\n\n Meredith Benton\, Moderator\n Lyndsay Fritz\, Proponent\, First Vice President\, Corporate Social Responsibility Officer\, Amalgamated Bank\n SkyWest Flight Attendants\n A Labor Law Expert

SUMMARY:Third Member meeting of the Labour Rights Investor Network
DESCRIPTION:In this third edition\, we will explore the phenomenon of union avoidance\, the policies and practices that companies increasingly use to prevent workers from exercising their rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining. Our speaker will be John Logan\, Professor and Director of Labor and Employment Studies at San Francisco State University’s College of Business. He will define union avoidance\, provide concrete examples of how it works\, and describe the increasingly international industry devoted to thwarting unionization. \nInterested in joining or learning more? SUMMARY:Proxy Voting with a Purpose: Strengthening Workers' Rights Through Asset Manager Accountability
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nAre asset managers voting in favour of resolutions calling on companies to uphold fundamental labour rights? Given that they are often the among the largest shareholders in companies\, global asset managers can carry significant influence when it comes to changing corporate behaviour on fundamental labour rights. Over the 2023 proxy season\, the Secretariat of the Global Unions’ Committee for Workers’ Capital (CWC) encouraged global asset managers to support resolutions that were backed by CWC participants at publicly-listed companies such as Amazon.com\, Starbucks\, Netflix\, POSCO Holdings\, and Kingspan Group. \nIn this webinar\, the CWC will release its latest report\, Voting for Labour Rights: How the World’s Largest Asset Managers Measured Up in Proxy Season 2023\, which reviews how global asset managers voted on CWC-backed resolutions. In addition to reviewing the report\, the webinar will provide asset owners concrete solutions to hold their asset managers accountable on their proxy voting records. \nThis webinar is for asset owner representatives (including trustees and staff) and trade union officials; other interested participants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Introducing the Labor Rights Investor Network: A Forum for Investor Education and Exchange on Workplace Rights
DESCRIPTION:Investors have three reasons to advance their stewardship of labour rights. First\, labour rights are human rights and investors have responsibilities to respect these rights in their investment and stewardship decisions. Second\, respect for labour rights enables investors to mitigate systemic and company-specific risks. And third\, freedom of association and collective bargaining\, along with other worker rights such as the right to a safe and healthy workplace\, can improve corporate performance. \nThe Labour Rights Investors Network will provide investors with the actionable information they need to engage on labour issues\, uphold their responsibilities to respect human rights\, mitigate workplace risks\, and drive stronger returns. An initiative of the Global Unions’ Committee on Workers’ Capital (CWC)\, the Network will offer events and resources\, including regular opportunities for education and exchange on issues such as identifying labour risks\, the impact of different legal contexts\, and how stewardship can improve transparency and performance on freedom of association and collective bargaining. The Network will provide written resources\, bring workers to share their experiences\, and connect investors to experts in such areas as international labour standards\, country-specific labour laws\, and workplace health and safety. \nOur first webinar will provide a selection of the types of content the Network will offer. You will hear from workers who have experienced labour risks firsthand\, learn about one company’s approach to mitigating that risk and hear from investors on why freedom of association is an important topic for stewardship. We will present an overview of the network and what you can expect from joining. \nWe are hosting two sessions of this webinar and invite you to register for the session that best fits your time zone and schedule as both events will follow the same agenda. You are invited to join one of the following two options: \n\nOption 1 (Australia/North America): Wednesday November 15th at 3pm Eastern Standard Time / 12pm Pacific Time/ 9pm CEST | Thursday November 16th at 7:00am Australian Eastern Daylight Time. REGISTER HERE \nOption 2 (Europe/North America): Monday November 20th at 3pm Central European Time / 9am Eastern Standard Time/ 6am Pacific Time. REGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Taxing Us All: The Investor Case for Tax Transparency at Brookfield
DESCRIPTION:Register Here \nTax avoidance is a major contributor to rising inflation\, which in turn contributes to an increased cost of living for us all. The OECD estimates revenue losses from profit shifting by corporations of US$100 – $240 billion annually. The PRI argues that tax avoidance is a key driver of global inequality. Headquartered in Toronto\, Brookfield Corporation has the largest tax gap and the most identified tax haven subsidiaries in Canada according to a February 2023 report from Canadians for Tax Fairness. \nThe BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) has filed a shareholder proposal asking Brookfield to bring disclosures in line with companies who report using The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Tax Standard. The proposal goes to a vote on June 9. \nThe CCSN\, BCGEU and CICTAR invite you to join this timely webinar as we lay out the investor case for tax transparency. \nSpeakers: \n\nEmma Pullman\, Head of Capital Stewardship\, BC General Employees’ Union\nJason Ward\, Principal Analyst\, CICTAR\nDT Cochrane\, Economist\, Canadians for Tax Fairness\n\nModerator: \n\nZaee Deshpande\, CWC secretariat

SUMMARY:Investors for Freedom of Association: Amazon Workers’ Rights and the 2023 Proxy Season Webinar
DESCRIPTION:In advance of the Amazon Annual General Meeting\, we would like to invite you to our upcoming webinar discussing the investor case for freedom of association and collective bargaining.\nOn May 4\, at 10 a.m. ET\, join us for a conversation on workers’ rights and investor advocacy. Register Now\n\n\nThe right to freedom of association and collective bargaining are fundamental human rights protected under the International Labour Organization (ILO) Core Conventions and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. However\, a number of companies\, including Amazon\, claim adherence to these international human rights standards\, but have been criticized over allegations of interference with workers’ rights to organize and bargain collectively. \nA group of investors—including the Shareholder Association for Research and Education (SHARE)\, SOC Investment Group\, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI)\, AP3 Third Swedish National Pension Fund\, CCLA Investment Management (CCLA) and Actiam—have filed a shareholder proposal asking Amazon to commission an independent\, third-party assessment of the Company’s adherence to its stated commitment to workers’ freedom of association and collective bargaining rights. \nAs public reports suggest that Amazon’s actions may contradict its human rights commitments\, our panelists will discuss investors’ expectations on companies’ responsibility to uphold freedom of association and collective bargaining rights\, and specifically address Amazon’s human rights policies and conduct towards employees seeking to organize. \nPanelists will include: \n\nLance Compa\, International Labor Law Professor Emeritus at Cornell Industrial and Labour Relation School\nMartin Buttle\, Better Work Lead at CCLA Investment Management\nAmazon workers\nRepresentatives from the group of investors that filed the Proposal including Emma Bayes\, Director of ESG Engagement at SOC Investment Group\n\nOther panelists will be confirmed soon. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Workforce Risks and Opportunities at Fresenius and FMC
DESCRIPTION:Register here \nPlease join SOC Investment Group and Fresenius Global Union Alliance for a webinar on 3rd May at 5pm CET/4pm GMT/11am EST to hear about the growing operational and legal risks at the global health care giants Fresenius SE and FMC from a workers’ perspective\, in advance of the companies’ AGMs on 16th and 17th May. \nAs Fresenius undergoes fundamental transformations this year\, they are facing severe staff-shortages amidst operating in the people-dependent business of delivering care. Across their complex business structure\, the German-based companies also must ensure they can meet the new legal requirements of the German Supply Chain Act\, which came into effect on 1st January 2023. This changing context for the company elevates the importance of the companies’ workforce and will require new approaches. The webinar will provide the opportunity for investors to gain new perspectives on the company from hearing directly from workers across the group\, analysis from global union federations\, and legal analysis of the new due diligence laws. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Global Company–Trade Union Agreements: A proxy for regulatory compliance & due diligence
DESCRIPTION:Join IndustriALL Global Union and LAPFF for a webinar to discuss a new investor brief: \nGlobal Company–Trade Union Agreements: A proxy for regulatory compliance & due diligence \n19 April at 3pm UK / 4pm CET  (10am ET) \nRegister here \nNext month marks the 10th anniversary of the collapse of Rana Plaza garment factory complex in Bangladesh\, in which over 1\,100 garment workers were killed. In the years since the tragedy\, several promising initiatives have taken shape\, involving collaboration between global labor unions and multinational brands\, binding agreements and remedy mechanisms. These are part of an emerging model of supply chain industrial relations\, and they include the International Accord for Health & Safety in the Textile & Garment Industry and ACT on Living Wages. \nLearning lessons from the failures of “social auditing” and factory certification schemes\, this newer model is centered on workers’ rights and company accountability for violations of these rights. Negotiated\, binding agreements can also serve as a reliable proxy for investors for regulatory compliance as mandatory human rights due diligence (mHRDD) laws emerge. \nAnd yet\, despite its failures\, social auditing persists\, and proposed mHRDD laws even risk being weakened if such “private voluntary regulation” is allowed to substitute for true due diligence. \nAgainst this backdrop\, IndustriALL has commissioned a technical brief that delves into negotiated\, binding agreements between business and trade unions\, making the case that\, besides reducing human rights risks to workers\, they can mitigate business risk for investors in the new regulatory landscape. IndustriALL and LAPFF are pleased to invite you to an investor webinar on 19 April at 3pm (UK)\, where we will present the brief and hear worker and investor perspectives on this model. \nSpeakers will include Due Diligence Design\, Aviva Investors\, IndustriALL Global Union and Bangladesh Garment & Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF). The event will be chaired by LAPFF Vice-Chair\, Cllr John Gray.
