Investors for Freedom of Association: Amazon Workers’ Rights and the 2023 Proxy Season Webinar

May 4, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am EDT

In advance of the Amazon Annual General Meeting, we would like to invite you to our upcoming webinar discussing the investor case for freedom of association and collective bargaining.

On May 4, at 10 a.m. ET, join us for a conversation on workers’ rights and investor advocacy. Register Now

The right to freedom of association and collective bargaining are fundamental human rights protected under the International Labour Organization (ILO) Core Conventions and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. However, a number of companies, including Amazon, claim adherence to these international human rights standards, but have been criticized over allegations of interference with workers’ rights to organize and bargain collectively.

A group of investors—including the Shareholder Association for Research and Education (SHARE), SOC Investment GroupBritish Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI), AP3 Third Swedish National Pension FundCCLA Investment Management (CCLA) and Actiam—have filed a shareholder proposal asking Amazon to commission an independent, third-party assessment of the Company’s adherence to its stated commitment to workers’ freedom of association and collective bargaining rights.

As public reports suggest that Amazon’s actions may contradict its human rights commitments, our panelists will discuss investors’ expectations on companies’ responsibility to uphold freedom of association and collective bargaining rights, and specifically address Amazon’s human rights policies and conduct towards employees seeking to organize.

Panelists will include:

  • Lance Compa, International Labor Law Professor Emeritus at Cornell Industrial and Labour Relation School
  • Martin Buttle, Better Work Lead at CCLA Investment Management
  • Amazon workers
  • Representatives from the group of investors that filed the Proposal including Emma Bayes, Director of ESG Engagement at SOC Investment Group

Other panelists will be confirmed soon.
